Good afternoon Sisters and Brothers of the Plainedge Federation of Teachers! I hope everyone is experiencing an excellent start to their work week and looking forward to our "We Make a Difference" awards ceremony this Thursday, April 27th at 6:30 PM.

One of the most important actions that a union can undertake is to give back to the community that they serve. Our membership takes this responsibility very seriously, by doing an outstanding job of organizing multiple fundraisers for different charities throughout the year. At the start of 2017, our Take Action Plainedge (TAP) committee, decided to take on the responsibility of community service by organizing a food drive for some local pantries. Members of the TAP committee collected five dollar donations from PFT members in each building and on Thursday, April 6th, some of the educators from our TAP committee visited BJ's in Levittown to purchase all the food items with the donated funds.

Although it was a very rainy afternoon, it did not deter our TAP members from heading out to the wholesale store, knowing that the food they bought would soon make its way to homes where it was needed. In the end, the TAP committee purchased nearly one thousand dollars of food, which was made possible by the generosity of our PFT membership. The donated food items were then sorted by our Plainedge Middle School life skill students and delivered to the Maria Regina and St. James food pantries, which serves families within Plainedge.

Thank you to all the members of the PFT and the TAP committee for making this food drive possible. It is the small acts of each of our members,
which allows our union as a whole, to have such a positive impact on our community. Once again, I look forward to seeing all of you at our biggest event of the year this coming Thursday night, April 27th! In solidarity.
